Why Walking Together May Be One of Life's Best Wellness Habits

My wife Ann Marie and I love to walk.

Like many people today, we track our steps, monitor our activity, and occasionally glance at our Apple Watches to see how close we are to filling those colorful rings.

But if I'm being honest, the real value of walking has very little to do with the numbers.

Walking is one of the best things we do for our relationship

The Benefits of Walking Together

A daily walk provides much more than physical exercise.

It creates space.

Space to talk.

Space to think.

Space to reconnect.

During our walks, Ann Marie and I discuss family, friends, business ideas, travel plans, and occasionally attempt to solve a few of the world's problems.

Some conversations flow effortlessly.

Walking Is Good for More Than Physical Health

Most people know that walking supports:

  • Heart health
  • Mobility
  • Balance
  • Healthy aging
  • Weight management

But some of the most important benefits are harder to measure.

Walking can help reduce stress, improve mood, stimulate creativity, and strengthen relationships.

There is something about moving forward together that encourages meaningful conversation.

Perhaps that's why so many important discussions seem to happen on a walk.

The Example My Parents Set

My parents, Betty and Frank "Jake" Jacobson, loved to walk.

They didn't need a fitness goal.

They didn't count steps.

They simply enjoyed being together.

Whether they were walking along Lake Michigan in Wisconsin or exploring the cobblestone streets of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, they shared a curiosity about the world and a genuine enjoyment of each other's company.

They were artists.

They were explorers.

They were lifelong learners.

Wherever they wandered, they seemed to discover something interesting and always returned with a story worth telling

Why Exploration Matters

One lesson I learned from my parents is that exploration keeps life interesting.

Sometimes we explore to find answers.

Sometimes we explore to solve problems.

Sometimes we explore simply because we're curious.

New places.

New people.

New ideas.

New experiences.

Those small adventures often become the stories we remember most.

When we stop exploring, life can become smaller.

When we stay curious, life continues to expand

Healthy Aging Through Movement and Curiosity

As I've gotten older, I've become increasingly convinced that healthy aging involves more than physical fitness.

It also requires curiosity.

A willingness to learn.

A desire to keep growing.

And a commitment to staying engaged with the people and world around us.

Walking supports all of those things.

It keeps the body moving and the mind open

A Simple Wellness Habit Anyone Can Start

The beauty of walking is its simplicity.

No special equipment.

No complicated instructions.

No expensive memberships.

Just comfortable shoes and a willingness to take the first step.

Whether it's a ten-minute walk around the neighborhood or a longer adventure with someone you love, the benefits can be remarkable

Jake's Favorite Remedy

My father believed in many simple wellness habits.

But if he could leave us with one piece of advice, I think it might have been this:

Go for a walk.

Explore.

Stay curious.

Spend time with people you love.

Those habits have a way of improving both the journey and the destination.

And if your walk happens to end with a glass of Jake's StrongGinger, all the better.

To Your Health,
